Bumblebee Poison Dart Frog Care Guide

Bumblebee poison dart frogs, or leucomelas, are active black-and-yellow dart frogs that use both the forest floor and vertical structure. They thrive in planted bioactive vivariums with cool temperatures, high humidity, and fresh airflow.

Leucomelas are often more tolerant of same-species groups than many Dendrobates, but that does not eliminate territorial or breeding-related aggression. Group behavior and body condition still need monitoring.

Housing

  • Use at least an 18 x 18 x 18 inch front-opening vivarium for a pair; 24 x 18 x 18 inches or larger is preferable for a small group.
  • Provide drainage, moisture-retentive bioactive substrate, thick leaf litter, live plants, cork, roots, and sturdy vertical structure.
  • Avoid deep water and unguarded pools; use shallow water features only.

Lighting and Heating

  • Provide a consistent 12-hour day/night cycle with a low-heat plant-growth light.
  • Optional UVB should be gentle, Ferguson Zone 1-style exposure over only part of the enclosure with abundant shade.
  • Maintain about 70-76°F by day and 65-72°F at night; brief 77-80°F conditions can occur, but sustained temperatures above 80°F should be corrected and 85°F+ can be dangerous.

Humidity and Substrate

  • Target roughly 70-90% humidity with temporary higher spikes after misting rather than constant saturation.
  • Use a drainage layer, screen separator, 2-3 inches of ABG-style substrate, and a thick leaf-litter layer.
  • Maintain damp microclimates while allowing some upper surfaces to dry slightly and keeping good airflow.

Food and Supplements

  • Flightless fruit flies are the staple feeder; springtails and other tiny captive-produced invertebrates can provide variety.
  • Juveniles generally eat small meals daily or at least 5-6 times weekly; adults commonly feed around 3-5 times weekly.
  • Dust most feedings with a reputable dart-frog supplement supplying calcium, appropriate D3, and preformed vitamin A; do not rely solely on beta-carotene.

Decor, Handling and Groups

  • Furnish in layers with dense planting, cork, seed pods, leaf litter, hides, bromeliads, and elevated perches or vertical cork.
  • Avoid bare-hand handling; use a clean deli cup or smooth container for necessary moves.
  • Same-species groups can work with sufficient space, visual barriers, and multiple feeding areas, but separate animals showing persistent aggression or food exclusion; never mix species, color forms, or localities.
